In the first of what will be two comebacks this year for JYP Entertainment sensation GOT7, Eyes On You is an electrically evocative album. With a colourful, retro theme (mullet included) this is different in every way to their last album 7 for 7, leaning heavily on house beats rather than the R&B rhythm found in previous album single ‘Teenager’. Moreover, the first single ‘Look’ is entirely written and produced by group leader Lim Jaebum, or Def Soul, his production pseudonym. While JB is known for his eclectic compositions, in every variation of the K-Pop genre, ‘Look’ became their most successful track on real-time music charts since their debut.
The highlight of the album is no doubt ‘One and Only You’, a special track in collaboration with SISTAR’s Hyolyn, as she embarks on her solo career. The track itself is simple, once more turning to 90’s nostalgia, with group members clad mostly in denim as Hyolyn vocalises above the enjoyably unembellished synth. The lack of rigidity found in ‘One and Only You’ is the same that is found throughout the rest of the album; even on balladlike tracks such as ‘Thank You’, the fun, laidback vibe is a pleasing constant, displaying a more tranquil side to the normally excitable group. Eyes On You, an ode to GOT7 fans, is an album to be had on repeat; perhaps not the dynamic entrance that has come to be expected of the group, but wonderful nonetheless.
