GRIZZLY (그리즐리) | New K-Artist Review

Describing himself as a ‘KPop, R&B singer-songwriter’, rising Korean artist Grizzly (그리즐리) brings a new flavour of passion to the world of Korean Music.

Debuting as an artist with the single ‘D.S.’ way back in 2014, his first EP ‘i’ was finally released in 2017, and well worth the wait. With ‘i’ nominated for EP of the year at DoIndie Korea 2017, and his second, newly released ‘Difference’, steadily rising up the Korean music charts he is quickly making headway within the industry. Already boasting several collaborations including a duet with ex-Tahiti member SOMA, not to mention his production work for idols such as B1A4, it is clear that Grizzly has adopted a take-no-prisoners attitude to his music – and it is working.

Music Video for track ‘i&’

As with all great singer-songwriters, his style is immediately obvious to the ear. Displaying a simplistic, chill vibe even in the most upbeat songs, his vocals are consistently soothing and almost romantic. This, combined with some easy-listening style keyboard, makes it easy to see how he is quickly becoming popular within the realms of both KPop and Western singer-songwriter fans.

However, listening to music in a foreign language can be distancing – your only hope of experiencing the music the way it is intended is through track production and artist delivery; and on both counts, Grizzly hits the mark. Particularly on ‘i&i’, a heartfelt description of regret and change, you are left with the lingering, melancholic feeling that only comes from a truly emotive song. While KPop idols often ‘wow’ foreigners with their upbeat and complex production, and rightfully so, Grizzly provides a brand new take – tasteful and refreshing, this is the K-R&B chill mix you never knew you needed.
